Malvern Prep ran for 304 yards to defeat Berks Catholic 37-7 in a non-league game Friday at Forino Sports Complex.
Senior Isaiah Wright and junior Yaahdir Nash combined for 165 yards for the Friars (3-1), who are ranked fifth in the state regardless of class by MaxPreps.
After holding Berks Catholic (3-2) to a three-and-out on the opening possession, Malvern took over on its 37. The Friars’ opening drive was capped by a 4-yard touchdown run by Wright. Senior kicker and Navy commit Jacob Reedy made the extra point to make it 7-0.
Malvern took over on its 30 after the second consecutive three-and-out for the Saints. On first down, quarterback John Capaldi fumbled, which was recovered by free safety Aron Reinhart.
The spark on defense ignited the crowd and Berks Catholic took over at Malvern’s 16-yard line. Two quick runs by Christian Cacchione got the Saints inside the 10, then Josiah Jordan scored on a 3-yard run to tie it with 1:03 left in the first quarter.
The Friars took the lead on a 15-yard run by Nash in the second quarter that was set up by his 14-yard run.
At 14-7 with 7:37 left to go in the half, the Saints couldn’t get their run game going and were forced to punt for the fourth time. The Friars took over on their 45 and Wright scored on a 35-yard run on third-and-3. A missed extra point by Reedy made it 20-7.
Reedy opened the second-half scoring with a 26-yard field goal.
The Friars were able to pull away midway through the third quarter when Capaldi connected with wide receiver Shawn Stocker on a 63-yard pass, which led to a 9-yard touchdown reception by Wright to make it 30-7.
A few possessions later, Berks Catholic cornerback Marvin Armistead intercepted a pass from backup quarterback Bryce Pippen in the end zone.
With 2:26 left, Anthony Czarzasty capped the scoring with a TD run.
Cacchione finished the game with 54 yards on 15 carries and Jordan had 36 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries.
