Man struck and killed by car 5 blocks from his north Reading home

A 43-year-old Reading man was struck and killed by a car late Monday as he was attempting to cross Centre Avenue about five blocks from his home in the city’s Riverside section, police said.

William Roberts was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident near Riverside Elementary School by a member of the Berks County coroner’s office, investigators said.

The accident happened about 10:10 p.m. between Pike and Amity streets, where there is no crosswalk.

Reading police provided this account in the crash report:

Roberts was crossing the 1400 block of Centre Avenue, which is also Route 61. It has a posted 35 mph speed limit.

Roberts was struck in the southbound lane by a car driven by a 20-year-old Reading woman. She wasn’t injured.

Centre Avenue was closed for about two hours following the crash while police investigated. The car needed to be towed.

Police said the driver won’t be charged.
