McQuaide stars in Villanova debut to knock off Colgate

Pat McQuaide threw for 299 yards, the most ever for a Villanova quarterback in his first start, as the Wildcats outlasted Colgate, 24-17, Saturday night.

McQuaide ran for a 28-yard touchdown in the second quarter to put Villanova up 14-0. His 56-yard touchdown pass to Lucas Kopecky broke a tie with 52 seconds left in the third quarter. The Wildcats forced three Colgate punts in the fourth quarter, then sealed the game with a pair of first-down runs by Isaiah Ragland on the final drive.

McQuaide, a grad student who transferred from Nicholls State, was 18-for-28. His yardage total was one better than that of the man he replaced, Connor Watkins, who threw for 298 in his first start to open the 2022 season. He also rushed three times for 41 yards.

David Avit led Villanova with 15 carries for 49 yards. Ragland struggled at 13 carries for 26. He opened the scoring with a one-yard TD run at 3:33 of the first quarter, then had two first-down runs totaling 27 yards to close the game out.

Luke Colella had five catches for 124 yards, Kopecky five for 98.

Colgate’s Zach Osborne was 15-for-30 for 239 yards through the air. He hit Treyvhon Sanders for a 32-yard score to get the Raiders on the board in the second quarter, then a 24-yard hookup with Winston Moore to tie the game at 17 with 2:25 left in the third quarter.
