Navy Seaman Nicole De Los Santos, a 2020 Muhlenberg High School graduate, is serving in Japan aboard the USS America.

She joined the Navy six months ago and said its skills and values are similar to what she experienced growing up in the Reading area.

“I learned a strong work ethic from my mom, as I saw her working and achieving what she wanted to do,” De Los Santos said in a statement issued by the Navy.

USS America is an amphibious warship. Such vessels often are called upon to support humanitarian and other contingency missions on short notice, according to Navy officials.

De Los Santos serves as part of the Forward Deployed Naval Forces in the Indo-Pacific region. Service members in this region are part of the U.S. Pacific Fleet.

“I am proud of how quickly I have gotten basic qualifications, damage control qualified, and I am going to get qualified to take the ship in and out of ports soon,” De Los Santos said.

She expressed pride in her service and thanks for her family support, saying: “I can relate more to my brothers, who have also served in the military, and our parents are very proud of our service. I also like being able to protect my loved ones.”
