More than 300 participate in Hands Off! Kutztown Fights Back

More than 300 people took to the streets in Kutztown on Saturday, joining the national Hands Off! movement to rally against the Trump administration’s federal government reforms.

“The people who spoke out today in small towns like Kutztown are worried about exactly the same things people are worried about no matter where they live. This massive protest showed the tremendous solidarity of people across the country who are demanding an end to the chaos (President Donald) Trump and (presidential adviser Elon) Musk are causing,” Hands Off! Kutztown Fights Back organizer Karen Feridun said in a statement.

Protesters lined the sidewalks at the center of town, chanting and holding signs calling on the president and Musk to stop dismantling the government and cutting off critical services and programs it provides. Chants also called for Congress to step in and do its job to stop the destruction, according to Feridun, a Kutztown resident.

“What happened today cannot be a one-time event. It’s clear that public pressure is the only thing other than the courts that have caused this president to reverse course,” Feridun said. “We need to keep showing up right now and for as long as it takes. The stakes are too great to do anything less.”

In downtown Reading, some 1,000 demonstrators gathered at the corners of Penn and Fifth streets to protest what they called “the destruction of the government and the economy for the benefit of President Donald Trump and his billionaire allies.”

The city rally was one of hundreds planned across the nation on Saturday, including in Kutztown and elsewhere in the region. Organizers said they expected it to be the largest single day of protest since Trump began his second term.

According to the Hands Off! movement’s website, the protests aim to bring attention to “the most brazen power grab in modern history,” referring to actions by President Donald Trump and his allies since his second term began.
