Muhlenberg’s Sydney Gring set meet and pool records in the 100-yard freestyle Saturday at the Central Penn League swimming championships at Wilson’s Roy G. Snyder Natatorium.
Gring, a junior, set the mark during the 400 free relay, opening with a leg of 50.70 seconds to breaks the record of 50.90 set by Emma Steckiel in 2020.
On the first day of the meet Friday, Gring led off the Muhls’ winning 200 free relay team by setting meet and pool records of 23.48 in the 50 free. She also set meet and pool marks in the 200 free Friday.
“It feels pretty good and super exciting,” Gring said when asked about her accomplishments. “I’m just glad to do it on a relay with my team.”
Gring also won the 100 breast in 1:04.38 on Saturday. The 100 breast was one of only two girls events not won by Exeter on the second day of the two-day meet. The Eagles won won 3-of-6 events on Friday.
Exeter’s Hannah Hurleman kicked things off Saturday with a win in the 100 free in 52.19. Lauren Ramsey, who won the 50 free Friday, won the 100 back Saturday in 56.74 for the Eagles. Exeter’s 400 free relay team of Hurleman, Ramsey, Gabrielle Istenes and Megan Unruh won in 3:30.50.
Schuylkill Valley’s Megan Ehrnfeldt shaved more than 10 seconds off her seed time and won the 500 freestyle in 5:05.17.
“I felt very good; very smooth,” Ehrnfeldt said. “I was happy with the time. It was my best time by almost two seconds so I’m very happy with it.”
In the boys, Exeter’s William Fanning won the 100 breast in 58.41, while swimmers from Gov. Mifflin and Wilson each won two of the other four events Saturday.
Gov. Mifflin’s William Troy won the 500 freestyle in an impressive 4:55.11. The win was about nine seconds faster than his seed time of 5:04.23.
“My goal was to get under five minutes,” Troy said. “I knew it was going to be a good race with the Ferenz brothers (Tyler and Matthew of Daniel Boone) and, yeah, it was just a fun race and felt good to win.”
Gov. Mifflin also won the 100 backstroke after Ben Gerhard finished in 52.19. Gerhard spent the meet focused on seeing how he’d finish in his off events.
“The goal of that race was just to kick it out fast,” said Gerhard, who also won the 200 IM Friday. “I was on off events today just to see how I’d do and then at districts I’ll be doing my main events, so hopefully I can win those and then win at states.”
Last year, Gerhard finished second in the 500 free and third in the 200 free at the state meet.
The host Bulldogs won the first and last boys’ events of the day.
Josh Woessner won the 100 freestyle in 48.31 in a tight race against RJ Shaffer of Muhlenberg, who finished in 48.64.
“I felt pretty good,” Woessner said. “I mean, it wasn’t the best I could have done but I’m still happy with it.”
Woessner won the 50 freestyle Friday in 21.92.
Woessner also mentioned that he and his teammates had their sights set on breaking the 400 freestyle relay record during the meet.
Wilson’s team of Chadd Corson, Isaiah Eberly, Woessner and Takoda Heckman won the 400 free relay in 3:09.29. They missed the record of 3:07.05 set in 2019 by Wilson.
Corson seemed disappointed despite the win and said he believes his team can use the experience as motivation to do better in districts.
“We felt pretty good, we all swam our best and did everything we could but we just couldn’t pull off the record,” Corson said. “I feel like we have some stuff to work on and there’s definitely a lot of motivation for districts.”
