Murderer Danelo Cavalcante, who escaped from Chester County Prison, spotted on camera early Saturday

POCOPSON — Authorities on Saturday said convicted murderer Danelo Sousa Cavalcante had been spotted less than 2 miles from the Chester County Prison, from where he had escaped about 40 hours earlier.

In a press release, the Chester County District Attorney’s Office said Cavalcante, 34, of Montgomery County was seen on a residential surveillance camera about 12:30 a.m. Saturday in the 1800 block of Lenape Road, about 1½ miles from the prison.

He was wearing pants, a light-colored T-shirt and white sneakers — the same clothing he was last seen in after he escaped from the prison early Thursday. He has long, black curly hair and was wearing a backpack, although it was unclear where he may have acquired the backpack.

Police also received a report of an attempted burglary at 11:30 p.m. in the 1000 block of Ballintree Lane in Pocopson. That location is about 3 miles south of the prison and not far from Longwood Gardens. The popular tourist destination announced on its website that it would be closed Saturday because of the manhunt.

A search of the surrounding area is being conducted by hundreds of law enforcement officers, including the U.S. Marshals, local, state and other federal agencies.

In the release, District Attorney Deb Ryan urged neighbors to be cautious in leaving their homes.

“Law enforcement is requesting that residents in the area remain indoors at this time,” said Ryan. “Lock your vehicles. Review your surveillance cameras and contact police if you observe anything suspicious.

“Danelo Cavalcante is considered an extremely dangerous man. Please remain vigilant in assisting with this search. If you see this individual do not approach him. Call 911 immediately.”

Cavalcante on Aug. 16 was convicted of first-degree murder for fatally stabbing his 33-year-old former girlfriend, Deborah Brandao, in front of her two children. He was sentenced to life in prison without parole Aug. 22. He is also reportedly wanted in his native Brazil in the killing of a man who owed him money in 2017.
