North Carolina defeats Northwestern, Exeter grad Payton Halsey in NCAA Division I field hockey final

Erin Matson redirected a Paityn Wirth shot with 1:19 left to lift top-seeded North Carolina a 2-1 win over second-seeded and defending champ Northwestern in the NCAA Division I field hockey championship game Sunday at Storrs, Conn.

Exeter grad Payton Halsey, a senior midfielder, played 57 minutes for the Wildcats (20-5).

The Tar Heels (21-0), who won a record 10th title, took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Ryleigh Heck in the second quarter.

Northwestern tied it on its first shot off its first corner on a goal by Bente Beckers.

North Carolina retook the lead just 39 seconds later.

East Stroudsburg wins PSAC title: East Stroudsburg scored in the third minute of overtime to beat Millersville 3-2 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference championship game Sunday at Kutztown’s Andre Reed Stadium.

Oley Valley grad Madison Kline, a senior, had an assist on the second goal for the Warriors (18-2).

Three Berks high school grads are on the Millersville (16-5) roster: Twin Valley’s Ashlynn Lennon, a redshirt senior defender; Twin Valley’s Morgan Lennon, a sophomore defender; and Exeter’s Grace Murray, a sophomore defender.
