The Yocum Institute for Arts Education, in collaboration with Youth Volunteer Corps of Reading (YVC), a program of VOiCEup Berks, is proud to announce the culmination of a two-year transformative journey: At Some Point, We Have to Talk — a groundbreaking, youth-driven play addressing mental health.
This powerful production shines a spotlight on some of the most pressing issues facing today’s youth, including suicide awareness, mental health stigma, and the importance of open dialogue. More than a performance, this initiative represents a movement to empower young voices, foster healing, and ignite meaningful conversations.
At the heart of the project are YVC’s Youth Mental Health Ambassadors (YMHA) — a dynamic and diverse group of students from across Berks County who are actively engaged in mental health training, advocacy, and peer support. These young leaders develop and spearhead youth-driven projects that raise awareness and reduce stigma around mental health.
They have taken on the vital role of amplifying youth voices, listening to their peers, and bringing real issues to the forefront through creative initiatives. Drawing from real stories, community input, and lived experience, YMHA has helped to shape At Some Point, which speaks with authenticity, urgency, and compassion.
“This is not just a play — it’s a conversation starter, a safe space, and a way for young people to know they are not alone,” said Susan Rohn, Executive Director, Yocum Institute for Arts Education.
A Unique Opportunity for Schools and Organizations
Schools and organizations have the opportunity to host this one-of-a-kind production and bring essential conversations about mental health directly to their communities. Each program includes:
- A 30-minute performance: A deeply moving, youth-driven play portraying real-life struggles.
- A 45-minute talk-back session: An interactive discussion led by YVC’s YMHA, encouraging students and educators to share, reflect, and learn together.
- Growth and empathy: Audiences walk away with stronger mental health awareness and tools to support themselves and others.
Benefits for Schools
By bringing this program to their campus, schools can:
- Increase mental health awareness and reduce stigma.
- Encourage open, honest conversation among students.
- Connect students with local organizations, resources, and support systems.
- Empower youth by giving them a safe space to share and learn.
