Ontelaunee Grange members recognized by State Grange

Recently two members of the Ontelaunee Grange #1617 of Leesport were recognized at the Pennsylvania State Grange Convention held at the Valley Forge Convention Center.

Ray Davis was recognized and received a Quilt of Valor for his military service. Ray served in the Army from 1964 to 1966. He took his basic training in Georgia, from there he went to San Antonio, Texas for his medic training and finished his service at Fort Sill in Oklahoma. His rank was was Specialist 4th Class. At Fort Sill, Ray was stationed with the 2nd Battalion of the 79th Artillery. He worked in a doctor’s office assisting the doctors when patients came in.  One of his jobs was to sit out at the firing range in case someone got hurt and to take care of them. When asked about his Army experience. Ray said he was glad he did it.

Nettie Kauffman was recognized as The Pennsylvania State Granger of the Year. Nettie currently holds the office of Secretary of the Ontelaunee Grange and is also the President of the Berks County Pomona Grange. Nettie joined the Grange at the age of 14 and has been very active in Ontelaunee Grange as well as the county grange and also involved in the state grange and is a member of the national grange. Nettie has been involved in many aspects of the Grange, including family activities director and monthly breakfast chairperson. She has held many officers chairs at her local Grange as well as the county and state level.

Nettie and her husband Irvin were named Pennsylvania Young Couple in 1971. Nettie has also won many awards over the years for her sewing and baking talents in the Grange.

Nettie is also very involved in her church Holy Trinity of Leesport, as well as a member of the Berks County Fair Board of Directors and is the secretary of Berks County Resource Networks.
