Orwigsburg making progress on water system improvement

Orwigsburg is another step closer to completing a SCADA upgrade on the borough water system.

SCADA, an acronym for supervisory control and data acquisition, involves software that controls industrial applications. Borough officials met with engineering experts last summer for an on-site visit to scope out the project and how much it may cost.

At the June 12 borough council meeting , Keystone Engineering was approved to upgrade the water SCADA system for $410,710. Keystone was on-site in May to verify wiring diagrams, and a new server with new software was installed a few days later.

In other business, crews have completed the first phase of a sewer project along Marshall Drive, Station Road and North Warren Street. Sanitary main line and lateral replacement work has been completed on North Warren Street, Station Avenue and Lee Court, and final curbing, yard restorations and paving are ongoing as scheduled.

A contractor submitted additional charges for excessive excavation and backfill used throughout the first phase as certain areas reportedly experienced abnormally wide trenches from subsurface wall collapses. Engineers are reviewing the request.

All Orwigsburg roads likely soon have the speed limit lowered to 25 mph. The borough already has a number of local streets limited to 25 mph. Officials are looking to establish that 25 mph limit on Route 443 (now 40 mph), South Liberty Street from Ridge Road to the borough line (now 40 mph) and East Market Street from North Perry Street to borough line (varies from 25 to 40 mph).

Regarding a sinkhole on Washington Street, borough manager Randy Miller’s report says PennDOT will not fix stormwater issues and that the borough is working on a plan to deal with the problem.

Upcoming borough events include American Xcellence Wrestling on June 22 at 7 p.m. at the Memorial, a farmers market on June 27 at the M&T lot, and the next council meeting on July 10 at 7 p.m. in council chambers.
