Orwigsburg police spread Christmas joy

Orwigsburg’s police department knows Santa Claus has really been busy this year. What with the elves being under the weather, the cost of reindeer food rising and all that extra weight Santa put on from being quarantined, the big man has been under a lot of pressure.

So, as always, the police have stepped in to lend a hand. Chief Vince McDonald, a father of two, is a big fan of the jolly man. McDonald decided to make it a bit easier for Santa to get the Christmas lists from the children of Orwigsburg.

McDonald found an old mailbox in the borough office, and with the help of Bartush Signs, Orwigsburg, had it painted and decorated so that Santa would be able to receive his letters at the North Pole without delay.

Chief McDonald assured us that all letters in the box would be expedited to Santa and children who included a return address would receive a personal reply from Santa himself. So far, Santa has received more than 100 letters from local children.

“This area is so community oriented that we wanted to make sure we had a direct line to Santa for the kids,” McDonald said. “We’re hoping to make this a yearly tradition.”

Officer Tanner Noecker has been instrumental on carrying on the tradition of raising money through No Shave November for Toys for Tots. With the help of the Big Impact Group of Schuylkill County, Noecker and his partners decided to do something a bit different.

With the funds raised ($1,185), the officers and borough employees fulfilled the holiday wishes of 10 students in the Blue Mountain and Schuylkill Haven Area school districts. The remaining money was donated to Toys for Tots.

Not content with making children happy, the police department purchased and distributed holiday cards to the Blue Mountain Elementary School kids who customized, signed them and delivered them to the residents of Seton Manor and Orwigsburg Center.

“The holidays are tough enough for some people, and we want to put smiles on some faces and reach out to the community,” Noecker said.

Let’s hope Santa is good to all those who helped bring joy to the children and residents of Orwigsburg.
