From City of Reading
Amtrak recently announced that its Thruway bus service between Reading, Pottstown, and 30th Street station in Philadelphia would be discontinued by Monday, March 17, with no replacement.
OurBus, America’s most highly rated intercity bus service, is actively studying the possibility of launching a replacement bus service, which would connect travelers between these three locations.
In 2019, OurBus and Klein Transportation worked together to start a replacement bus service when Bieber Transportation suddenly announced it was suspending its Reading-New York route. After the Bieber service was suspended on a Friday, the replacement bus service launched the Monday after.
While it is possible to deploy the new bus service on short notice, OurBus is currently assessing travel patterns and customer input before making a final decision to launch the service. The community is encouraged to provide their feedback and suggestions using this survey. The survey inputs will help determine departure times, days of operations, and ticket prices.

Schedules, ticket prices, and stop location on a replacement OurBus route may be different from the current Amtrak Thruway bus. OurBus is also considering extending the route to another destination, such as Philadelphia Airport, so that the service appeals to a larger audience.
A final decision will be announced by Friday, March 14.
Mayor Eddie Morán shared the following statement regarding the potential new service: “We’re grateful to hear that OurBus is considering restoring the bus route between Reading and Philadelphia following the cancellation of Amtrak’s Thruway service. This potential solution does not change our strong commitment to the SRPRA or the return of train service to Reading.”
