In the evening of Wednesday, May 7, Caron Treatment Centers, a leading, internationally recognized nonprofit dedicated to transforming the lives of individuals, families, and communities through addiction and behavioral healthcare treatment, research, prevention, and addiction medicine education, honored Michael and Diane Duff with the Richard J. Caron Award of Excellence during a ceremony at the Reading DoubleTree Hotel. Benchmark Construction was also recognized with the 2025 Partner in Recovery Award.
The Richard J. Caron Award of Excellence is presented annually to an individual or couple who, in the estimation of Caron’s Board of Trustees, demonstrates the same spirit of caring and compassion exemplified by Caron’s founders, Dick and Catherine Caron. Funds raised during the 35th annual Richard J. Caron Award of Excellence Celebration benefits Caron’s mission, providing quality and lifesaving addiction and mental health treatment, education, and prevention services to thousands of individuals and families.
“Michael and Diane embody the values and spirit that define this award: steadfast commitment, compassion, and a deep-rooted desire to serve others,” said John Driscoll, CEO of Caron Treatment Centers. “Their leadership, volunteerism and advocacy have left a meaningful mark on Caron and countless other organizations across Berks County. We are honored to celebrate their decades of dedication to improving lives and strengthening our community.”
Longtime residents of Lower Heidelberg Township, the Duffs have been active members of the Berks County community. Michael currently serves as Vice President of Community Engagement for Penske Transportation Solutions, following a distinguished legal and executive career at the company. Diane, a former educator, is a committed community volunteer who has given her time and talents to organizations such as Caron, the United Way of Berks County, and the John Paul II Center for Special Learning.
Together, Michael and Diane helped shape the future of numerous local nonprofits through board involvement and philanthropic support. They were the inaugural Co-Chairs of Caron’s Central Pennsylvania Advisory Council and continue to serve in leadership roles — Michael now chairs Caron’s Greater PA Regional Advisory Board, and Diane remains an active member. Their service has been recognized by several organizations, including the United Way of Berks County, the Salvation Army of Reading and the Association of Fundraising Professionals. The Duffs’ enduring impact reflects their shared belief in the words of St. Teresa of Calcutta: “Let no one ever come to you without leaving better and happier.”
At the event, Benchmark Construction was also honored with the 2025 Partner in Recovery Award for its generous and ongoing support of Caron. The company and its leaders have been pivotal in offering Caron’s prevention program for athletes, Peak Performance, to school districts in Lancaster and Lebanon counties. In addition, Benchmark led the construction of the Fran & Doug Tieman Research Center and the Neag Medical Center on Caron’s Wernersville campus and the Keele Center on Caron’s Florida campus.
The event’s Honorary Chairs were Brian Hard and Mylene Krzanowski. The Event Committee Co-Chairs were Glynis Fitzgerald, Dan Huyett, and Ellen Huyett. Presenting sponsors were Steven Wall and Julie Uebler, and Michael and Diane Duff.
