Landon Tengwall, who was expected to start at left guard for Penn State, announced on social media Wednesday that he is retiring from football due to an injury.
Tengwall, a 6-6, 317-pound redshirt sophomore, had missed time in preseason camp with an undisclosed injury.
“It is with a heavy heart that I am announcing my retirement from football,” Tengwall wrote in his statement. “Unfortunately, I have sustained an injury that will not allow me to safely continue to play the game I love and that has given me so much.
“I want to thank my family, my friends, Coach (James) Franklin, Coach (Phil) Trautwein, my teammates and all the Penn State coaches and staff. They have all provided invaluable support through this difficult time.
“Penn State will always be my home. I will always be a proud Penn State football player. Penn State has the greatest fans in the world and I want to thank all of you for supporting me during my time on the field and now in my next chapter.”
Tengwall, who went to high school at Our Lady of Good Counsel in Maryland, was the top-rated player in Penn State’s 2021 recruiting class.
He started five games last season before suffering an upper-body injury. He appeared in three games in 2021.
It’s likely either Lackawanna College transfer JB Nelson or Vega Ioane will step into the starting lineup.
