PennDOT plans to replace bridge in northwest Berks go on virtual display

PennDOT is displaying online plans for a project to replace the Route 645 (Camp Swatara Road) bridge over Little Swatara Creek in northwest Berks County.

This online display includes digital picture boards and an online comment form available to the public until April 3.

The proposed project will replace the existing 200-foot-long, three-span, steel I-beam bridge over the creek between Bethel and Tulpehocken townships. Engineers have deemed the bridge structurally deficient.

The structure will be replaced with a 240-foot-long, three-span, prestressed concrete spread box beam bridge consisting of two 11-foot lanes — one southbound and one northbound — with 5-foot shoulders on both approaches.

Route 645 has an average daily traffic volume of 2,456 vehicles.

Traffic will be detoured during construction. The proposed passenger-vehicle detour is about 4 miles and includes parts of Frystown, Little Mountain and Kutztown roads.

The proposed truck detour is about 9 miles and includes part of Interstate 78, Route 501 and Rosebud Road.

The project is anticipated to occur during the 2025 and 2026 construction seasons.

PennDOT invites community members to provide input for the project by going to www.PennDOT.gov/District5 and clicking on the Public Meetings link under the District Links heading. Choose the Berks County box, then choose the Route 645 Bridge over Little Swatara Creek project tile.

The purpose of the plans display is to introduce the project and solicit input, questions or concerns regarding the project. It is also an opportunity for the public to review and comment on the project’s potential effect on cultural resources, as required under the National Historic Preservation Act.
