Plans for apartment complex in Berks County clears zoning hurdle

The Ontelaunee Township Zoning Hearing Board has approved a zoning variance for a proposed apartment complex in the township.

Wyomissing developers, 1025 Berkshire LP, who own and manage roughly 20 apartment complexes in Pennsylvania, some locally, plans on developing an apartment home community on 27.47 acres at 24 Loose Lane.

Plans include 10 three-story apartment buildings on the land, including a dog park, clubhouse, pool, basketball and tennis courts.

Township zoning currently requires an apartment building be no more than 160 feet long, but the developers need 162.33 feet to stick with their development model, according to township officials.

The zoners had no problem Tuesday with a 2.33 foot extension and granted the variance, although the developers only released a preliminary sketch on Tuesday.

The number of proposed apartments is not known at this preliminary stage.

More state and local approvals will be needed in upcoming months.

In the meantime, the tract already contains a two-story single-family house with multiple accessory structures.

According to township Secretary/Treasurer Kim Berger, the developer plans to clear out existing buildings.

Berger did not know when the developers would begin the proposed project.
