Northern Berks Regional police and Berks County detectives are at the scene of a shooting that happened this morning at a prominent Route 61 intersection.
Police were dispatched about 6:30 a.m. Friday for gunfire at Route 61 and Snyder Road in Ontelaunee Township, Northern Berks Police Chief James Heiser said at the scene.
Officers found a person who had been shot. The victim was taken by ambulance to the Reading Hospital trauma center.
Muhlenberg Township police assisted at the scene. Detectives with the district attorney’s office arrived to assist with the investigation, which is ongoing.

Route 61, also known as Pottsville Pike, was initially closed as well as Snyder Road. Route 61 opened a short time later. Snyder Road remains closed with crime-scene tape protecting a large area of the road and adjacent property of a furniture store.
Heiser wouldn’t say if the shooter is in custody or what precipitated the shooting. He added that investigators were in the process of talking to witnesses.
“We do have witnesses, and I’m pretty confident we’ll be able to solve this soon,” he said.
Around the time he spoke, a deputy with the coroner’s office arrived at the scene.
This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
