Police: Juveniles rode around northwestern Berks pretending to be officers

Seven juveniles were arrested after they drove around northwestern Berks and northeastern Lebanon County in an older model Ford Crown Victoria with after-market accessories that made it look like a police car and attempted to stop other motorists, according to investigators.

Police were initially dispatched about 7:45 p.m. Saturday. A 911 caller reported an older-model black “police-type” vehicle with red-and-blue lights and a siren was attempting to pull over motorists in the area of Lancaster Avenue (Route 501) and Mill Road in Tulpehocken Township.

Bethel Township police assisted Tulpehocken police at that time but were unable to locate the vehicle.

According to Bethel police:

About 1½ hours later, Bethel police were dispatched to the 7800 block of Lancaster Avenue for a similar report. Minutes later, Bethel and Tulphehocken police stopped a black 2006 Ford Crown Victoria equipped with windshield-mounted LED lights, a spotlight and a siren.

The sedan was occupied by seven juveniles.

All were detained and transported to the Bethel police station. The car was towed and impounded at the police station.

In the presence of their parents, the youths were interviewed about their involvement. All admitted to conducting at least one traffic stop after activating the emergency lights and siren. They were released to their parents.

A search of the vehicle revealed a functional siren and spotlight as well as aftermarket LED lights capable of emitting a variety of colors. A pair of toy handcuffs were found inside the car.

Investigators learned the youths met in Bethel Township before traveling to the area of a Walmart in Lebanon County and returning to Bethel, where they continued trying to pull over vehicles.

Juvenile charges are pending related to impersonation of a public servant and disorderly conduct. The investigation remains open.

Police are asking anyone who was a witness to or victim of these incidents and hasn’t already spoken to officers to call Bethel police at 717-933-4210 or 610-655-4911.
