Police respond to after-school melee outside Reading High

Dozens of Reading police officers descended on Reading High School on Tuesday afternoon for what officials called a small riot.

Reading Police Chief Richard Tornielli said officers were called to the area after they received reports that multiple fights were taking place or had taken place shortly after the high school dismissed students for the day around 2:40 p.m.

Officers arrived on scene to get things under control and disperse the crowd and tried to break up a fight at the Sunoco convenience store across 13th Street.

While officers were attempting to disperse the crowd, three juveniles assaulted three police officers, Tornielli said.

The officers suffered minor injuries and two juvenile males and one juvenile female were arrested and transported to City Hall, police said.

One male was charged with aggravated assault on a police officer and related charges and was detained by Berks County juvenile authorities, police said.

Another male was released to a parent/guardian and was charged with misdemeanor disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and related charges, police said.

The female was released to a parent/guardian and was charged with summary disorderly conduct and harassment.
