The Pottstown area is brimming with opportunities for campers to have fun while getting physical activity this summer. Camp serves as a wonderful opportunity for children of all ages to try something new, make new friends, and gain confidence and independence.
Whether your child wants to try a new sport, navigate the river, or learn about nature, this summer can serve as a time for them to make some lasting memories.

“Pottstown has a wide array of summer programming for youth that not only supports physical activity, but builds social skills, positive identity, and career readiness,” said Craig Colistra, program officer for Pottstown Area Health & Wellness Foundation. “Some of these programs are low to no cost to help reduce the financial barriers so that all youth have the opportunity to benefit from summer recreational programming.”
Learn the fundamentals of tennis
At Greater Pottstown Tennis & Learning, which offers summer day camp, Corey Bowlin, executive director, hopes new players find a love for tennis that encourages them to continue to play after summer.

“The number one goal is for the kids to have fun, learn the fundamentals of tennis and get some exercise,” Bowlin said. “For returning players, we want to help build new skills, develop match play and work on singles and doubles strategies.”
Bowlin said that campers will not only learn tennis but also teamwork, social skills, leadership, positive reinforcement, confidence building and healthy behaviors.

Whether he’s on the court teaching, observing or overseeing their camp offerings, Bowlin shared some highlights of the experience.
“The two biggest highlights are seeing the growth from campers by the end of the week and how much fun they have in the games and different activities,” he said.
Explore nature
If your child prefers exploring nature and enjoys being on the water, Montgomery County Community College and Schuylkill River Greenways have collaborated to offer ‘H2Y0! Summer Camp’.

“The camp with MCCC is a great collaboration so we can reach youth in Pottstown with watershed activities like kayaking, water testing and learning about aquatic life in the Schuylkill River,” said Rosemary Keane, communications director of Schuylkill River Greenways. “We always hope that youth who participate in our program become stewards and ambassadors for the river to learn why it’s important to help preserve it.”
In addition to learning new skills, by the end of the week, campers will have a better understanding of the Schuylkill River Watershed and how different factors impact the health of rivers and streams. They will even get the opportunity to do some fishing and crayfish catching.
Accessible to all
H2Y0! is accessible to all through their voluntary three-tier fee program that is intended to align with everyone’s different ability to pay.
“You may choose the tier that is most suitable for your situation,” SRW states on their website. “It is a free-will system — you tell us what is affordable to you or your family. All participants receive the camp experience no matter what they pay.”Here’s a list of some camp opportunities in Pottstown this summer that involve an opportunity for kids to get moving while having fun!
