Power line comes down over Schuylkill River and cuts power to 4,000 customers in Reading

Power was knocked out to about 4,000 Met-Ed customers in northeast Reading late Tuesday into early today after a major transmission line that crosses the Schuylkill River came down, officials said.

The outage occurred about 10 p.m. and lasted until 1:30 a.m. Wednesday, when technicians completed rerouting power to the last of the customers, FirstEnergy spokesman Todd Meyers said.

The line came down for undetermined reasons where it connects to a wooden structure in a Carpenter Technology Corp. parking lot of the eastern shore of the river, he said.

The outage affected mostly the city’s northeast section.

Meyers said Met-Ed crews planned to restore the line Wednesday but it will be no easy job. Tree trimming crews will be needed to make a clearing for trucks to access the de-energized line, which was in the water.
