Progress reported on Blue Mountain baseball field upgrades

Some upgrades have been completed at the Blue Mountain School District baseball field. That was the word at the Feb. 15 Committee of the Whole meeting. Vice President Dr. Timothy Grube says gates and the fence have been completed and work is being done on the home plate and outfield area.

Following an inquiry about Wi-Fi, an estimated cost of $3,477 to add it was received. Costs and details of sharing costs need to be worked out.

Grube thanked all those who volunteered to help with some of the work at the field.

An update on the status of the 2024-25 budget was announced with a $750,000 deficit being shown, but with funds possibly increasing by $100K. Several grants are being pursued for safety, security and facilities.

Superintendent Dr. David Helsel said that due to the retirement of Gwendolyn Witmer-Belding, it was decided to change her position into an assistant superintendent. This would eliminate the post of director of elementary and secondary education. At the Feb. 22 meeting, Kristin Frederick was appointed assistant superintendent. Her runs through Feb. 22, 2029.

Also approved at the meeting:

• A summer credit recovery program to be held between June 17 and July 12.

• Retroactive approval of a three-year telephone service provider contract with NEC Univerge Blue effective Feb. 6.

• Guyette Communications Industries to perform the district’s new telephone system conversion and installation at a cost of $5,282.

• A first reading of Policy 903, which details public comment in board meetings. Proposals include requiring that any nonresident wishing to comment complete and submit a request form to the board secretary prior to the state of the meeting. Nonresidents will be given seven minutes to address the board. It would be up to the board if more time is warranted and when it would be allotted.
