Proposed northeast Berks shopping center clears a hurdle

The Maxatawny Township supervisors voted 3-0 to allow the dividing of a 31-acre property at 15100 Kutztown Road to build a strip-mall style shopping center.

The vote took place at a conditional use hearing to allow splitting the site into 1.2-acre building pad sites.

A conditional use application for building a shopping center on the site was previously approved in 2010, on the condition that no subdivision would take place.

The property — in the township’s light industrial/commercial zoning district— is owned by Regent-Kutztown LLC and is being developed by GDP Kutztown LLC.

Subdivision of the property will now be allowed on the condition that pad sites are subject to reciprocal easements for maintenance, access, utilities, parking and stormwater management.

Plans for construction of the shopping center have been reviewed without recommendation by the planning commission, and the plans have yet to be approved by supervisors.

A timeline for construction of the shopping center is unavailable.
