Reading Fightin Phils’ rally comes up short in loss to Akron Aeros

The Reading Fightin Phils couldn’t complete a comeback from a five-run deficit and fell to the Akron Aeros 5-4 in an Eastern League game Tuesday at Canal Park in Akron, Ohio.

Reading (1-3) gave up two runs in the first, two in the second and one in the fourth to fall behind 5-0.

The Fightins rallied for three runs in the eighth.

Jhailyn Ortiz was hit by a pitch to lead off. Two outs later, Madison Stokes singled. Wendell Rijo tripled to knock in two, then scored on a throwing error to make it 5-3.

In the Reading ninth, Kevin Vicuna led off with a walk. Two outs later, Ortiz reached on an error to put runners at first and second. Logan O’Hoppe singled to drive in Vicuna to make it 5-4, and send Ortiz to third.

Josh Ockimey lined out to center to end it.

Rijo finished 2-for-4 and O’Hoppe 2-for-5.

Reading starter Jack Perkins (0-1) allowed five earned runs on five hits and two walks in four innings. He struck out one.

Fightins relievers Julian Garcia (one inning), Mike Adams (two innings) and Matt Seelinger (one inning) combined for four hitless innings.
