Reading food pantry to feed hundreds and hand out Thanksgiving meals

A local mobile food pantry will hold a special meal for city residents on Friday evening.

Life Impact Community Services will hold a free meal and food giveaway at 739 Washington St. on Friday, Nov. 19.

The meal starts at 6 p.m. and the food giveaway will begin at 6:30 p.m.

“Just show up for food and love,” said the Rev. Dr. Ty McMillan, founder of Life Impact Community Services. “Our mission is healing the brokenhearted.”

People who show up to Friday’s pantry will receive a hot meal and a box of food for Thanksgiving.

Life Impact Community Services holds a free meal and food and clothing giveaway every Friday at 6 p.m. at 739 Washington St.

Friday’s event will easily feed 200 to 300 people, McMillan said.

McMillan’s organization has been feeding people in need for several years now.

“I have a heart for the homeless,” McMillan said. “I’m from New York City and part of my childhood was living in a homeless shelter.”

McMillian also feeds those who are in need in Chester and Montgomery counties as well.

There is an increased need for food since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, McMillan said.

“We are pretty much seeing food insecurity, especially those individuals impacted by COVID: Those people that lost their jobs and lost their income,” he said.

McMillan also helps out other organizations.

“We received a phone call from Helping Harvest (Food Bank in Spring Township) regarding a senior person that needed food and we were able to drop food off for her, which was a blessing,” he said.
