Reading High football game canceled due to COVID concerns

Reading High’s home football game scheduled for Friday night has been canceled due to COVID concerns, athletic director Allen McCloud said Thursday.

Reading was scheduled to host North County (Md.) Friday at 7 p.m. at Shirk Stadium. Reading officials contacted North County officials on Wednesday to inform them the game had to be canceled.

All football activities at Reading have been paused until more testing and contact tracing can take place. McCloud said he had no timetable for when the Red Knights would resume practices and their schedule.

Reading is scheduled to play at Gov. Mifflin on Saturday, Oct. 2, in a Berks I opener. McCloud said he was in contact with Gov. Mifflin athletic director Pat Tulley to update him about the situation. No decision has been made on whether that game will be played or canceled, McCloud said.

Reading High was the only Berks Football League member not to play last fall due to the coronavirus pandemic. The Red Knights played an abbreviated schedule in the spring.

This season, Reading is off a 1-3 start.
