Reading High School has been recognized as a leader in environmental education by the U.S. Department of Education.
The district announced that the school was named in April as a 2024 Green Ribbon School for its commitment to sustainable practices and leadership in facilities, health and environmental education. This award highlights the school’s innovative efforts to reduce environmental impact, lower utility costs, promote health and wellness, and deliver effective sustainability education.
Reading High is among 41 schools, 10 school districts, three postsecondary institutions and one early-learning center selected to receive the honor this year.
“Receiving the Green Ribbon School award reflects Reading High School’s continuous dedication to environmental stewardship and sustainability,” said Marietta Crossley, high school biology teacher. “We are honored to be recognized nationally for our efforts in creating a green and healthy school environment.”
The high school previously earned recognition for other environmentally conscious initiatives, the district said in a release. These include a bronze award from the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Services’ Schoolyard Habitats Project for the courtyard renovation and outdoor classroom, a silver award for the LEAF – Learning About Trees Arbor Day and Arboretum Work initiative and silver-level certification as a National Wildlife Federation Eco-School.

The high school’s campus has been designated an arboretum of deciduous and coniferous trees.
These awards illustrate the school’s dedication to sustainability and innovation, the district said.
“Being named a Green Ribbon School is a tremendous honor for Reading High School and the entire district,” said Dr. Jennifer Murray, superintendent. “We are excited to leverage this recognition to further enhance our sustainability initiatives, promoting a healthier and more environmentally conscious learning environment for our students and community.”
The U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools program is an award that celebrates institutions for their sustainability practices, serving as models for schools nationwide.
The honorees were formally recognized during a ceremony in Washington, D.C., this month.
