Reading High wins in District 3 Class 3A girls team tennis quarterfinals

Reading High advanced to the District 3 Class 3A girls tennis team semifinals with a 3-2 victory over third-seeded Hershey Thursday at Hershey Racquet Club.

The Berks champion Red Knights (16-1) advanced to face second-seeded Manheim Township (11-0) in a semifinal Monday at Hershey Racquet Club at a time to be announced. The Blue Streaks beat Dallastown 3-2.

Sixth-seeded Reading, which making its first appearance in the district team tournament, got singles wins against the Trojans (14-2) from Valeria Sanchez at No. 2 and Hailey Guerrero at No. 3, and a win from the team of Hallie Guerrero and Kaitlyn Retana at No. 1 doubles.

Meanwhile, seven Berks players will begin play in the District 3 singles tournament, which begins Friday at Hershey Racquet Club with first-round matches at noon. The quarterfinals will follow.

In Class 2A, Hamburg sophomore Mia Gassert, last year’s runner-up, is the top seed. Also in the 16-player field are Wyomissing’s Charlotte Reedy, Kutztown’s Sierra Smart and Fleetwood’s Alaina Smith.

In the 16-player Class 3A draw are Reading High’s Ashley Retana and Sanchez and Exeter’s Hansika Kunduru.

Gassert fell to defending champ Anna Millen of Lancaster Catholic 6-1, 6-1 in last year’s final. Millen opted not to play tennis this season.

The semifinals and finals in both classes are Saturday at Hershey Racquet Club.

Berks singles champ Emma Perkins of Conrad Weiser has opted to partner with Victoria Waltz in doubles for the individual postseason. She will be going for her third straight district doubles title and her second state title. She won PIAA gold with Alex Pancu in 2020 and silver with Michelle Timothy last season.

The district doubles tournaments will be held Oct. 21-22 at Hershey Racquet Club.
