Reading High’s Ruben Rodriguez named Berks Player of the Year in boys basketball

Reading High’s Ruben Rodriguez has been named the Berks Boys Basketball League Player of the Year for the second consecutive season and Exeter’s Matt Ashcroft was named Coach of the Year, the BCIAA announced on Sunday.

Through the county playoffs, Rodriguez, a 6-1 guard, leads the Berks champion Red Knights in scoring at 21.9 points per game.

Rodriguez led the Red Knights (24-1) to its second consecutive Berks Conference title and 25th all-time. In the process, he surpassed Reading High grad and Los Angeles Lakers guard Lonnie Walker IV for 10th place on Berks County’s all-time scoring list with 1,838 points.

Rodriguez, a three-time selection, is joined on the All-Berks team by teammates Aris Rodriguez and Myles Grey, both guards and seniors, as well as Exeter senior center Anthony Caccese, Exeter senior guard Zyion Paschall and Berks Catholic senior guard Ryan Koch.

Fleetwood senior guard Jake Karnish was named to the team for the second consecutive year after leading the league in scoring at 22.1 points per game.

Ashcroft led the Eagles (19-6) to their first division title since 1974 and to the Berks Conference final.

All selections were made by the league coaches.
