Reading High’s Ruben Rodriguez scores school-record 50 points against Daniel Boone

Junior guard Ruben Rodriguez scored a school-record 50 points in Reading High’s 111-44 victory over Daniel Boone in a Berks Conference crossover game Wednesday night at Geigle Complex.

Rodriguez broke the modern-day record held by former Red Knights star Donyell Marshall, who scored 43 in an 87-73 win over Williamsport on Jan. 4, 1991, at the Geigle.

Rodriguez had 21 points in the first quarter, 20 in the second and nine in the third before coach Rick Perez took him out with about five minutes left in the quarter.

Rodriguez made a 3-pointer from the left wing to set the record early in the third quarter and reached 50 with a mid-range jumper.

“Honestly, I still can’t believe it,” he said. “My phone is going crazy right now. It’s just a blessing. Every time I think about it, it’s just crazy. I didn’t even think this was possible. Seeing it happen is crazy.”

Rodriguez made 21 field goals, including four 3-pointers, and 4-of-5 free throws. He now has 984 points in his career, including his freshman year at Muhlenberg and the last two seasons at Reading. He can reach the milestone against Vertical Academy Friday night at Santander Arena.

Perez said Rodriguez played about 15 minutes, making the record even more remarkable.

“We were playing really good trap defense,” Rodriguez said. “I was just able to get into the passing lanes. The points just came quickly off fastbreaks. I didn’t know what I had until somebody told me I had 41 at halftime.”

Daniel Alcantara scored 15 points and Aris Rodriguez had 11 for the Red Knights (7-0 Berks I, 13-2).

Mason Sacarello scored 16 points and Brendan Gaines had 14 for the Blazers (0-7 Berks II, 0-15).
