Reading man charged with sexually abusing young girl for years

A Reading man has been arrested on charges that he sexually assaulted a girl for about nine years, starting when she was 5, in a city home.

Berks County Detectives charged Miguel Reyes, 55, of the 400 block of South Seventh Street with rape of a child, indecent assault, corruption of a minor and child endangerment.

Reyes was taken into custody Tuesday at a city residence by the district attorney’s detectives.

He was committed to Berks County Jail in lieu of $150,000 bail to await a hearing following arraignment before District Judge Alvin B. Robinson.

According to detectives:

The investigation began in April when detectives received a Childline referral from the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services. It was alleged that Reyes had sexually abused a juvenile female over a number of years.

In a forensic interview at the Berks County Children’s Alliance Center, the victim, now 17, disclosed that Reyes sexually abused her when she was between the ages of 5 and 14.

During the investigation, detectives learned that when Reyes became aware of these allegations he pleaded with the victim’s mother in a series of texts and audio messages not to contact authorities. He pleaded for forgiveness, saying he was “correcting everything in my life in front of God.”

In one of the voice messages, he said: “I know I messed up real bad. There are no words to say sorry. But my life is in your hands, and I don’t want to go to jail.”
