A Reading man broke into a building owned by the Reading Public Works Department late Friday night and ate cookies he found in the kitchen, according to police.
Manuel Pena-Perez, 39, of the 300 block of South Third Street has been charged with one count each of burglary and criminal mischief, and two counts of criminal trespassing. He was arraigned Saturday in Reading Central Court by District Judge F. Richard Drumheller and placed in Berks County Prison in lieu of $10,000 bail.
According to city police:
An officer responded to a burglary alarm call in the first block of North 11th Street just before midnight Friday. An interior motion alarm had been tripped twice.
The officer, while still outside, discovered two side windows of a second-floor rear door had been destroyed. The officer saw a man leaving the rear of the building.
The man, later determined to be Pena-Perez, approached the officer slowly with his hands in the air.
Pena-Perez said he had broken the windows to get into the building. He went to a kitchen and ate cookies he found there.
It was unclear how the department uses the building.
