Reading reopens search for Public Works director

The search for a director to lead Reading’s Public Works department will resume, the city announced.

Mayor Eddie Moran had selected Martin Neely, a New York civil and geotechnical engineer.

“After further evaluation and discussion, the administration has determined that the proposed candidate is no longer under consideration,” the city announced Friday in a news release.

“While the administration is disappointed that the search for a permanent public works director remains ongoing,” the release continued, “it must be emphasized that the director position is vitally important to the city and selecting the right person for the job is critical.”

The mayor and his administration remain dedicated to finding the right candidate as quickly as possible, the release said, and will continue to work with professional search firms.

Reading’s home-rule charter requires that the public works director be a certified public engineer.

Any candidate selected will need confirmation by City Council before the position can be officially filled.
