Reading Royals defeat Newfoundland in Game 4 of ECHL North Division finals

With their season on the line, the Reading Royals ensured they will play at least one more game.

Reading defeated Newfoundland 6-3 in Game 4 of the ECHL North Division finals on Thursday night in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, for its first victory in the series.

The Royals dropped the series’ first three games, all of which were at Santander Arena.

Reading got off to a strong start on Thursday night and led 4-0 after one period. Forward Jacob Gaucher scored twice and forward Alec Butcher and defenseman Will MacKinnon each scored once in the first.

Newfoundland responded with two goals in the second period. Forward Tyler Boland scored on the power play before forward Pavel Gogolev also found the back of the net.

Royals forward Shane Sellar opened the third period with a power-play goal to make it 5-2. Gaucher had the secondary assist, and finished with two goals and two assists.

Growlers defenseman Brennan Kapcheck scored late in the third period to make it 5-3. Reading defenseman Mason Millman scored with less than four minutes remaining to make it 6-3.

Both teams were strong on the penalty kill. The Royals went 6-for-7, while the Growlers were 3-for-4.

Reading goaltender Pat Nagle had 27 saves. Newfoundland goalie Dryden McKay had nine saves in the first period before he was pulled in favor of Luke Cavallin, who had eight saves in the final two periods.

The two teams will face off in Game 5 on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.
