The Reading Royals dropped their second straight game on Tuesday night.

The Royals fell to Maine 7-3 in Game 4 of the ECHL North Division semifinals in Portland, Maine, tying the best-of-seven series 2-2.

Reading could not contain the Mariners’ offense or forward Carter Johnson, who scored a hat trick. Forwards Mathew Santos and Curtis Hall and defensemen Connor Doherty and Gabriel Chicoine each had one goal for Maine.

Doherty put the Mariners up 1-0 early in the first period. The Royals made it 1-1 on a goal from forward Evan Barratt, his third in as many games.

The Mariners took a 2-1 lead with less than two minutes remaining in the first period as Santos scored. Reading responded again with a goal from forward Charlie Gerard to make it 2-2 just over a minute into the second period.

Maine controlled the rest of the game, scoring four consecutive goals to take a 6-2 lead. Chicoine and Hall each scored in the second period, and Johnson scored three times in the third.

Royals defenseman Ryan Cook scored in the final minutes of the third period to make it 6-3 before Johnson completed his hat trick with an empty-net goal. The goal was Cook’s first in a Kelly Cup playoff game in his career.

Maine recorded more than 40 shots for the second consecutive game, as it had 41 on Tuesday night. Reading goaltender Nolan Maier recorded 34 saves in his first start of the series.

Mariners goalie François Brassard made 36 saves. He has made two starts in the series, winning both.
