Reading Royals dominated by Newfoundland in Game 5 of ECHL North Division finals

Reading was unable to earn a series-clinching victory on Thursday night.

The Royals lost 5-1 to Newfoundland, which staved off elimination with a win in Game 5 of the ECHL North Division finals in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.

The Growlers cut Reading’s series lead to 3-2. The Royals will host Game 6 of the series on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Santander Arena.

Newfoundland never trailed Thursday night, scoring five goals for the second consecutive game. The Growlers were stout on special teams, going 3-for-5 on the power play.

Newfoundland took a 1-0 lead on a power-play goal from forward Jeremy McKenna with 30 seconds remaining in the first period. Reading tied it 1-1 with a power-play goal from forward Thomas Ebbing early in the second period.

The Growlers retook the lead on a goal from forward Orrin Centazzo midway through the second.

The Growlers scored three goals in the third period, two of which came on the power play. Forward Pavel Gogolev scored twice, while forward Tyler Boland scored once.

Royals goaltender Pat Nagle made 23 saves. Newfoundland outshot Reading 28-25.
