Reading began the second leg of its road trip on Wednesday night with a loss.
In the first matchup of a three-game series, the Royals lost to Newfoundland 4-2. Reading has lost six of its last seven, including three against the Growlers.
Royals forward Jacob Pritchard scored twice, his first multi-goal game of the season. Pritchard leads Reading in goals and points.
The Royals never led and were outshot 31-22. Four Growlers scored.
Goaltender Pat Nagle got the start after being loaned from Lehigh Valley to Reading on Monday. He made 27 saves.
Newfoundland remains atop the North Division with 28 points. The Royals are in second with 17 points.
