Reading Royals score season-high nine goals, dominate Newfoundland

Reading’s offense exploded for a season-high nine goals on Thursday night.

Forwards Trevor Gooch and Thomas Ebbing each scored hat tricks and three other Royals registered goals in a 9-2 ECHL victory over Newfoundland at St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.

The game, the opener of a three-game series, remained scoreless through the first period. Reading began its onslaught in the second period, scoring four goals.

In addition to hat tricks from Gooch and Ebbing, forwards Jacob Pritchard and Brad Morrison and defenseman Dominic Cormier each scored once for the Royals. Gooch also had an assist.

Growlers forward Marc Johnstone scored the game’s opening goal 26 seconds into the second period. However, Newfoundland could not hold on to the lead, allowing four goals in the span of 16 minutes.

Johnstone scored again late in the second period to cut the Royals’ lead to 4-2. Reading responded with five goals in the third.

Both teams recorded 39 shots. Royals goaltender Kirill Ustimenko made 37 saves.

Reading leads the North Division with a .647 winning percentage and 44 points. The Growlers are in second place with a .600 winning percentage and 36 points.
