Reading Royals sweep two-game series against Worcester

Reading earned back-to-back victories over Worcester on Tuesday and Wednesday night.

The Royals defeated the Railers 6-3 on Tuesday before winning 3-2 on Wednesday at Santander Arena, completing the two-game series sweep.

On Tuesday night, forward Trevor Gooch scored a hat trick with one goal in the second period and two in the third period. He also had an assist and finished with a team-high four points.

Trailing 3-2 late in the second period, Reading scored four unanswered goals — including three from Gooch — to earn the comeback victory. Royals forward Thomas Ebbing scored what proved to be the decisive goal early in the third period.

On Wednesday night, Reading scored three goals early in the first period and remained ahead the rest of the game. Gooch, Ebbing and forward Frank DiChiara all scored in the span of three minutes to lift the Royals over Worcester.

Ebbing’s goal was the 50th of his professional career, 36 of which have come with Reading. He has scored 24 goals this season, marking a career high.

Prior to Tuesday’s win, the Royals signed goaltender Mike Robinson, a San Jose Sharks prospect who was selected by the team in the third round of the 2015 NHL draft. Robinson recently concluded his fifth and final collegiate season at New Hampshire, posting a 2.61 goals-against average and a .904 save percentage in 27 games.

The move provides Reading with depth at the goalie position after Kirill Ustimenko and Pat Nagle were promoted to Lehigh Valley and Logan Flodell was signed by Belleville of the AHL earlier this month. Robinson joins Hayden Hawkey as one of the two goaltenders on the Royals’ current roster.
