Veterans on staff in the Reading School District were presented with commemorative challenge coins in honor of their service to the U.S. and students and families in the city.
After moving from a building principal to director of human resources, Dr. April Rostek recognized a need to foster a culture of appreciation within the district.

“Our employees dedicate their time to our students, families and community,” Rostek said in a release. “We, in return, want to create opportunities to make them feel appreciated. Recognizing our veteran staff members on Veterans Day with this challenge coin presentation is just one way we are enhancing our workplace culture and celebrating the valuable contributions of our team members.”
The concept of recognizing veterans with challenge coins emerged from discussions on how to meaningfully honor those served, officials said.
“Many of our service men and women do not serve to be recognized, but it is important to us, as a district, to ensure their sacrifices are valued,” Rostek said. “The challenge coin is a longstanding military tradition that symbolizes camaraderie and honor, and it felt like a fitting tribute to our veterans.”
The specially designed challenge coin, bearing the school district’s insignia, was created by Nate Ross, director of communication. The insignia adds a personal touch to the coin, symbolizing the unique bond between the district and its veteran employees.
“These coins are a symbol of our gratitude and respect,” said Dr. Jennifer Murray, superintendent. “They honor the dedication that our veterans bring to RSD every day. By recognizing their service, we reinforce our commitment to supporting and valuing every member of our district family.”
Each veteran received a coin as a personal thank you.
“Our hope is that when these veterans receive their coin, they know that their contributions — both inside and
outside the classroom — are deeply valued,” Rostek said.
