A 17-year-old Reading boy was fatally injured last weekend when he hit a landscaping truck while riding a bicycle near City Park, police said.
The accident happened Sunday just before 4 p.m. at 11th and Washington streets. The teen, Cesar Perez, was conscious when he was taken to Reading Hospital by Reading Fire Department ambulance, but later died of his injuries in the hospital, investigators said.
According to the crash report:
The heavy-duty pickup truck driven by a 31-year-old Reading man was traveling downhill on Washington Street, approaching the intersection with North 11th Street.
A group of juveniles on bicycles were riding westbound, some on one wheel, weaving between cars.
The traffic signal at North 11th was green when the truck driver began turning right onto North 11th. As the truck completed the turn, one of the bicycles, operated by Perez, crashed into the passenger side of the truck.
Perez wasn’t wearing a helmet.
Police cited improper crossing of a roadway by the bicyclist as the cause of the crash.
Perez was the 30th person to die this year as a result of crashes on Berks County roads.
