ReadingFilm hosts screening of ‘They Survived Together’

ReadingFilm presents a screening of the documentary film “They Survived Together” at the GoggleWorks Center for the Arts Boscov Theater on April 21 at 6 p.m.

“We’re fortunate to bring filmmaker John Rokosny back to Reading to participate in a panel discussion and Q&A following the film. We hope you will join us in this evening of remembrance, discovery, and connection,” said Cammie Harris, Executive Director, ReadingFilm.

“They Survived Together” chronicles the experience of one family’s escape from the ghetto of Krakow, Poland during World War II.

“It’s a moving portrait of courage, faith and endurance,” said Harris. “The film also serves as a chilling reminder of impact of war on families, with a message that is unfortunately still relevant today.”

A filmmaker meet and greet reception, hosted with support from the Jewish Federation of Reading/Berks, will be held at 6 p.m.

“As soon as Andriette and I met the Neiger family, and heard their incredible story, we knew we had to make this film,” said filmmaker John Rokosny in his director’s comments on the film’s website, https://www.theysurvivedtogetherfilm.com. “We were so moved by their story, we were brought to tears. Our goal is to honor their journey.”

The Neigers lived in a tight-knit Jewish community in Krakow when Nazi troops invaded Poland during WWII.

Rokosny said they wanted to create a film that will tell the story of one family, in their own words, “as a voice for every family who went through this atrocity – and to honor those who survived, and remember, with deep reverence, those who did not.”

“We want to share this story so it will never be forgotten,” said Rokosny.

The film screening will be at 7 p.m. with a film run time of 74 minutes, followed by a panel discussion and filmmaker question and answer session.

Purchase tickets directly from the GoggleWorks online at https://goggleworks.org/event/they-survived-together/ or at the door. GoggleWorks Center for the Arts is located at 201 Washington St., Reading.

“They Survived Together,” being featured at screenings all over the country, has recently been picked up by PBS and was featured at the 2021 ReadingFilmFEST.
