Redner’s to Host United Way of Berks County Shopping Spree

From United Way of Berks County

On Wednesday, March 26, Redner’s Fresh Market, Wyomissing, will host the United Way campaign incentive shopping spree, a three-minute dash through the store’s aisles. The company provides the shopping spree as an incentive for those contributing to United Way’s annual fundraising campaign. Donors are eligible to win the incentive by contributing $4.00 or more per week, or a $208 annual gift.

“United Way is committed to helping Berks Countians live stronger lives, and Redner’s is proud to support the organization’s work. With this year’s shopping spree proceeds slated to help the less fortunate in our community it expands the good work being done,” shared Eric White, Redner’s Director of Marketing and Communications.

Helping others is what inspired Thomas Henefer to “pay it forward” when he was originally selected as the shopping spree incentive winner at United Way’s Victory Celebration late last year. He wanted to share with those in need and chose to provide the shopping spree grocery items to United Way agency partner, New Journey Community Outreach. The agency provides social outreach to our community’s most vulnerable residents and serves as the largest community meal center in Berks by serving 400 meals every day. Shopping spree items will be provided to its food pantry, which reduces food insecurity for 125+ families each week.

Tonya Cruz, a FirstEnergy employee, is a United Way Emerging Leaders member and will serve as the “runner” and dash through the store aisles to gather grocery items on behalf of New Journey. “I’m up for the challenge, and I’m happy to be a part of this effort. The combined work of United Way and New Journey helps so many in our community, and this food will help feed hundreds of Berks Countians through New Journey’s programs,” said Cruz.

“When we share food with those facing difficulties, we also provide hope and comfort. We are grateful for the compassion shared by Thomas and Tonya, as well as for the generous support of Redner’s and United Way,” added Christie Botterbusch, New Journey’s Executive Director. “It’s heartening to see our community working together to make a difference.”

Redner’s has hosted the event for over 10 years. The three-minute shopping spree begins at 6 p.m. with store customers cheering on the winner. Typically, the shopping spree winnings total approximately $1,000.

“We are grateful for Redner’s continued support and for sponsoring the shopping spree. This year’s event is extra special as it demonstrates how teamwork and compassion can help fight hunger. United Way works with community partners year-round to tackle the issue. It’s a sobering fact that one in five Berks Countians are food insecure,” shared Tammy White, president of United Way of Berks County.

“Helping people live stronger lives is at the root of our work, and as we celebrate our 100th anniversary this year we share gratitude with our partners and donors. It’s only by working together that we will continue our legacy of helping others and strengthening our community for generations to come.”

Last year, more than $10.6 million was raised to support community needs within United Way’s focus areas of education, financial stability, and health and safety net services. United Way of Berks County is marking its 100 anniversary this year, and the 2025 campaign launches in mid-September with Angel and Scott Helm serving as Campaign Co-Chairs. United Way program investments help more than 190,000 Berks Countians annually.
