The Eagles have their man to freshen up a ‘stale’ offense.
The team has tapped former Los Angeles Chargers and Dallas Cowboys offensive coordinator Kellen Moore to join Nick Sirianni’s staff in a coaching re-shuffle that includes both coordinators.
ESPN first reported that the team has reached an agreement with Moore.
Moore spent just the one season with the Chargers, who fired coach Brandon Staley and replaced him with Michigan’s national championship winner Jim Harbaugh. The 35-year-old former Boise State quarterback was the Cowboys’ offensive coordinator from 2019-22 where he oversaw a unit that ranked near the top of the league in points per game (27.7), yards per game (391) and 3rd-down conversion percentage (44%).
Moore replaces Brian Johnson, who lasted just one season as the Eagles’ coordinator, and was let go following the team’s collapse from 10-1 to wild-card playoff exit. Most alarming was the regression of quarterback Jalen Hurts as the $250 million man went from MVP candidate to QB who threw a career-high 15 interceptions.
The Eagles looked particularly inept in their 32-9 wild-card loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. They had no answer for the Bucs’ blitzing defense and seemed to have no idea what a hot route was. Moore should help with that by incorporating motion to help Hurts identify defensive looks and scheming ways to get the ball out of his hand more quickly.
“This will be our offense,” Sirianni said at a press conference last week. “This will be the Philadelphia Eagles’ offense, not whoever, name the coordinator’s offense, or my name on it or whoever. … This will be our offense.”
Sirianni admitted during the news conference that his role will be that of a CEO head coach and he’ll let Moore and new defensive coordinator Vic Fangio call the plays.
The Eagles announced the hire of Fangio on Saturday. He spent the past season with Miami in the same role after finishings 2022 as a consultant for the Eagles.
“Vic’s reputation obviously speaks for itself,” Sirianni said. “He’s a brilliant defensive mind who has coached at a very high level in this league for many years. In my time spent with Vic, I’ve seen firsthand what makes him such a great coach — tremendous knowledge of the game, passion, and work ethic. I’m excited for our coaches and players to be able to learn from him and see it for themselves.”
The Eagles fired defensive coordinator Sean Desai last week after one season. Senior assistant Matt Patricia took over playcalling duties from Desai in December. He also won’t return.
Desai replaced Jonathan Gannon, who left to be Arizona’s head coach after Philadelphia lost the Super Bowl last year.
The 65-year-old Fangio has been a defensive coordinator with Carolina, Indianapolis, Houston, San Francisco, Chicago and Miami. Fangio was Denver’s head coach from 2019-21.
