Residents of northern Berks home escape fire in the middle of the night

A Mohrsville home was gutted by a fire discovered by the homeowners in the middle of the night.

The occupants of the one-story home in the 800 block of Mohrsville Road in Ontelaunee Township were awakened by a loud popping noise about 3:20 a.m. Saturday, Lt. Todd Boughter of Leesport Fire Company said.

They discovered the living room was aflame, got out safely and called 911, he said.

Fire crews arrived to find fire and smoke throughout the house. They put out the flames within minutes, but the small house was essentially gutted, Boughter said.

A state police fire marshal arrived to investigate the cause.

The homeowners were being assisted with emergency housing by their homeowner’s insurance.
