Rite Aid to close 33 more stores; among 320 announced since June

Rite Aid has continued to announce the closing of more of its stores.

The company announced 33 more closings in bankruptcy filings on Friday. Thirty-two of the 33 stores are in Ohio and Michigan. One location will close in Washington.

Since the beginning of June, Rite Aid has announced that it would close 320 stores. All but five of the stores have been in Ohio and Michigan.

Rite Aid, which was based in East Pennsboro Township near Camp Hill for decades and is now based in Philadelphia, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in October to begin restructuring to significantly reduce its debt.

Since October, the company has announced in bankruptcy filings the closing of 813 stores.

U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Michael Kaplan approved Rite Aid’s bankruptcy plan at a court hearing in June in Trenton, New Jersey, allowing the pharmacy chain to cut $2 billion in debt and turn over control of the company to a group of its lenders, according to CNBC.

Rite Aid plans to exit from bankruptcy soon, funded by $2.55 billion in financing provided by its lenders, according to Reuters. The chain had more than 2,100 stores when it filed for bankruptcy in October.
