A two-run seventh inning allowed the Rochester Red Wings to end their 12-game losing streak with a 3-1 victory Tuesday night over the struggling Lehigh Valley IronPigs.
The IronPigs’ magic number to clinch the International League’s first-half title remains at four with five games remaining.
Lehigh Valley won nine of the previous 12 meetings this season, all in Rochester, which entered the game with the International League’s worst ERA and tied for the lowest fielding percentage.
It was the Red Wings’ first victory this season when scoring fewer than four runs. They were 0-33.
The IronPigs, who didn’t have a hit in the last six innings, have lost eight of their last 12 games and their lead over the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp is reduced to two. That is the closest any team has been since May 10.
Jacksonville scored four runs in the top of the ninth to win 6-4 at Syracuse. The Jumbo Shrimp have won eight of their last nine games.
How they scored
Bottom 1: Oscar Mercado singled, stole second and scored on Keaton Anthony’s two-out double. Anthony has at least one hit in his first six Triple-A games. IronPigs 1-0.
Top 2: Drew Millas doubled to lead off, was sacrificed to third on Nick Schnell’s bunt and scored when Andrew Pinckney’s grounder was not thrown accurately to the plate. Tied 1-1.
Top 7: Nick Schnell hit a one-out, opposite-field home run. Pinckney followed with an infield single, stole second and scored on Nasim Nunez’s two-out single. Red Wings 3-1.
