Ruben Rodriguez scores 35 in Reading High’s boys basketball win over Berks Catholic

Berks Catholic gave Reading High all it could handle for a half until Ruben Rodriguez took matters into his own hands.

Rodriguez scored 25 of his game-high 35 points in the second half to lead the Red Knights to an 87-70 victory over the Saints in a Berks Conference Division I game Monday night before a full house at Wolf Gymnasium.

Reading (9-0, 17-2) won its sixth straight and snapped Berks Catholic’s seven-game winning streak with a 51-point outburst in the second half.

It was a meeting of two of the top teams in the county and District 3. The Red Knights are No. 1 in the District 3 Class 6A power ratings, and the Saints are No. 1 in Class 4A.

The Saints (7-3, 15-3) came back from a 10-point deficit to tie the Red Knights 36-36 at halftime behind the 3-point shooting of Ryan Koch and Jack Miller, who combined for 23 points in the first half.

Rodriguez scored 10 points in the first two minutes of the second half as Reading tried to pull away, but Josiah Jordan buried a 3 to tie it 46-46 with 5:35 left in the third.

Rodriguez then fed Xavier Davis for a tiebreaking layup and delivered another pass to Davis for a three-point play. The Knights pulled away from there.

Daniel Alcantara scored 24 points for Reading, Davis had a career-high 14 points and Rodriguez had seven assists.

Koch scored 22 points for Berks Catholic. Jordan had 20, Aidan Sands had 14 and Miller 10. The Saints made 12 of 23 shots from 3-point range but committed 23 turnovers.

In the first half. Reading built leads of 25-15 and 28-18 before Berks Catholic came back to tie it at the half.
