With a chill to the morning air, precautions had to be taken.
Some slowly stretched, others hopped in place. Anything to get the blood flowing, to get the muscles warmed up and ready to go.
More than 150 runners took part in Hope Rescue Mission’s annual Patriot 5K Run on Saturday at Gring’s Mill Recreation Area in Spring Township.
Kate Alley, executive director of the LightHouse Women and Children’s Shelter, said proceeds from the event will support homeless veterans at the Reading mission.
“This event is helping to support homeless veterans,” she said. “We put priority on making sure our veterans are given housing, meals and supportive services. This fundraiser will allow us to continue that work.”

The race was a family affair for Thomas and Georgia Crassas. The father and daughter duo were hoping to do some bonding while supporting an organization that they believe is doing wonderful things for the community.
“I love running,” 8-year-old Georgia said.
Thomas Crassas said his family has been volunteers at the organization for about 10 years, getting to know many of the men who have passed through the shelter over the years.
“Hope Rescue Mission serves the community selflessly,” he said. “They give people a second chance by helping them get back on their feet, which is something I truly believe in and think is beautiful.”

Fellow runner Helene Horn said she looks forward to the event every fall.
“This event has incredible meaning to the community,” she said. “I love seeing everyone come together for such a worthy cause. And I love running it because Gring’s Mill is just a beautiful place for something like this.”
Horn is a big supporter of the Hope Rescue Mission, especially its commitment to serving veterans who may be in need of some assistance.
Michael Disston feels the same way. He has been a volunteer at the organization for several years, helping to lead a weekly Bible study group with some of the residents.
“I get to help a great cause and get my morning exercise — what more could you ask for in an event,” he said.
